Installation of Epoxy Garage Floor Coating

Not only is an epoxy garage floor coating extremely durable, but it makes your garage look great. There are many kits available to purchase online and install yourself, but you should think long and hard about whether doing so is worth the money saved on professional installation. Here are the two main steps involved, and what to expect when performing them.

Preparation

After deciding on the type of flooring you want, the first thing to do is completely clean out your garage. This step is best accomplished on your own, because only you know what items you can live without and which you want to make room for once you have remodeled the space. Next, you need to sand the existing flooring to remove any bumps or cracks. Unless you own a large floor grinder, this step is more difficult to accomplish without professional help. Grinders are loud and require ear protection. They also cause the upper body to vibrate, and can make the hands and arms go numb temporarily.

Installation

Applying epoxy is not rocket science, but there is a knack to it that comes only with practice. Professional installers use a squeegee to spread the sticky substance to a precise thickness; if you are not accustomed to estimating thicknesses in millimeters, you can always use a ruler to measure it precisely. This step requires a strong back that can handle working in a stooped position for an extended period of time. You also need to to cover your nose to protect yourself from noxious fumes that will be present until the epoxy dries.

If you are ready to give your home garage a make-over, nothing is as dramatic as a new epoxy garage floor coating in place of worn cement. Before you get started, however, be sure to weigh the costs and benefits of attempting to install it on your own.
